In response to continuous landslide threats, the Kalimpong district administration has announced the closure of a crucial stretch of NH10 for 48 hours, effective from the morning of March 30th. This decision, the fifth in nine days, prioritizes public safety amidst recurring landslides that have posed challenges for residents, transporters, and tourists.
The affected stretch, spanning from Rabi Jhora to 29th Mile, serves as a vital road connecting the hill district of Kalimpong and the state of Sikkim with Siliguri and other parts of the country. However, recent bouts of heavy rainfall triggered landslides, necessitating temporary closures to mitigate potential risks.
According to Balasubramanian T., the district magistrate of Kalimpong, the decision to halt traffic along NH10 was prompted by sudden downpours that led to debris and boulders sliding onto the highway in vulnerable areas. In light of safety concerns, vehicular movement was restricted to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of commuters.
Despite efforts to reopen the highway following improvements in weather conditions, subsequent instances of landslides prompted the administration to issue further restrictions. On March 27th, vehicles were allowed limited movement between Rabi Jhora and 29th Mile, only to face renewed closures due to ongoing landslide threats.
In response to the latest closure, alternative routes have been identified to facilitate travel between Sikkim, Kalimpong, and Siliguri. Small vehicles will be rerouted via Munsong, l7th Mile, Algarah, Lava, and Gorubathan, while goods vehicles will follow a similar route during specified hours.
While the safety measures are crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring the well-being of commuters, they have also resulted in additional travel time and fuel costs for residents and tourists. Transporters and those associated with the tourism industry have expressed concerns over the impact of recurring closures on travelers’ plans and the region’s economy.
Despite the challenges posed by the closure of NH10, the Kalimpong district administration remains committed to prioritizing public safety and implementing measures to mitigate the risks associated with landslides. As efforts continue to address the underlying issues contributing to the recurring closures, stakeholders are hopeful for a sustainable solution that ensures safe and reliable transportation along this vital corridor.
