In a somber yet chaotic scene, thousands of people gathered to bid farewell to gangster Mukhtar Ansari as his funeral procession wound through the streets of Mohammadabad in Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh. Ansari, a prominent figure in the state’s underworld, passed away on Thursday, March 28th, after suffering a deterioration in his health while in jail. His funeral, held on Saturday, March 30th, drew a massive crowd of supporters who chanted slogans of “Mukhtar Ansari Zindabad” as they paid their final respects.
The funeral procession, which began at Ansari’s ancestral home in Mohammadabad, saw an overwhelming show of solidarity from his supporters. Despite tight security measures put in place by authorities, the sheer number of attendees led to chaotic scenes as barricades were broken in an attempt to enter the graveyard.
Among those present at the funeral were members of Ansari’s family, including Afzal Ansari, Omar Ansari, and other relatives. Despite the presence of a large police contingent, the situation became tense as emotions ran high among the gathered crowd.
The procession, closely monitored by security forces, made its way to the Kali Bagh graveyard, where Ansari was laid to rest next to his parents. However, as the procession neared the graveyard, tensions escalated, and clashes erupted between the crowd and the police. The police attempted to maintain order, but the overwhelming number of attendees led to a brief scuffle.
Authorities had initially planned for only the family to enter the graveyard, but the sheer size of the crowd made it difficult to control. Eventually, the gates were breached, and the police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Mukhtar Ansari, a convicted criminal with a history of involvement in murder and extortion cases, was also facing charges in several other criminal matters at the time of his death. His passing, and the massive turnout at his funeral, drew parallels to similar scenes witnessed during the funerals of other controversial figures, including terrorists Yakub Memon and Burhan Wani.
Despite the contentious nature of Ansari’s legacy, his funeral served as a reminder of the complex dynamics at play in Uttar Pradesh’s political and social landscape. The overwhelming display of support from his supporters, albeit amidst chaos, underscored the deep-rooted connections and allegiances that exist within the state’s underworld.
